Just Announced: Three Festival Circuit Hits Coming To Calgary Film
There are just a few more days to go before the Opening Gala kicks off the 2017 Calgary International Film Festival, but we're still on the lookout for the best new films of the season. We are excited to announce today that we have picked up three more films, and they've already been getting a lot of buzz on the festival circuit!
First up is the French drama BPM (BEATS PER MINUTE), a story based on the real experiences of director Robin Campillo and his co-writer Philippe Mangeot. In the early 1990s, they were activists with ACT UP, an AIDS advocacy group that often pushed the limits of civil disobedience and violent protest in order to make their voices - and those of AIDS sufferers around the world - heard. The film has been making a splash at several festivals, most notably at TIFF and at Cannes, where it won four awards, including a Grand Prize of the Jury.
Next up is the powerhouse performance of Harry Dean Stanton in LUCKY, which was one of the last roles he did before his death last week. In it, he perfectly portrays an aging atheistic cowboy with a strong independent streak, facing the end of his life as it inevitably draws closer with his own particular brand of sardonic humour and insight. A stark look at mortality, loneliness, and the impact each of us has on the people in our world, LUCKY is garnering rave reviews for first-time feature director John Carroll Lynch. Catch it on Wednesday, September 27 at Eau Claire!
And thirdly, we are so excited that we will be showing Greta Gerwig's solo directorial feature debut, LADY BIRD. This California coming-of-age story, starring Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, is making a major impact in its festival career, despite only premiering at the beginning of September. Ronan plays the title role of Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson, a high schooler with big dreams of moving away and finding a different life, whose idealistic imaginings often butt heads with the realities and limitations of her surroundings. The film received a standing ovation at TIFF and is on a path to become one of the most buzzed-about movies of 2017.
As part of our ongoing commitment to our fan experience, due to popular demand, we have added a third screening of BORG/MCENROE (Tuesday, September 26, 7:45 PM - Globe). Our packs and passes are now sold out, but single tickets to this and all of our other films are now available. If you have already bought a ticket pack and are ready to redeem them, you have some promo coupons, or you simply want to pick up some last-minute tickets, here's a handy how-to guide that should help if you have any other questions. The countdown to Wednesday is on!
