Ballot Crew Volunteers are responsible for ensuring that audience ballots from the previous evening are accurately counted each morning. Individuals on this crew will be detail oriented, able to work collaboratively and independently, highly organized, able to meet deadlines, and take direction.
Box Office Assistance Crew
This crew assists the Box Office team during peak hours by proactively approaching festival patrons and provide information when asked. Individuals in this crew are collaborative, will be able to retain details about the box office, and enjoy engaging with the public.
The Check-in/out Volunteer will assist arriving and departing volunteers, alert their team of any Volunteers who have not arrived on-time (and assist in finding a replacement), receive any materials that are being delivered, confirm any materials that are being sent out, check-out tools and materials to their team, and accomplish administrative tasks as assigned. Individuals in this crew will be highly organized, collaborative, effective communicators, and able to work under some degree of stress.
Festival Headquarters Crew
The Festival HQ Volunteer acts as part receptionist, part administrator, and part traffic/info-controller at the Festival HQ. They will distribute volunteer ‘perks,’ perform administrative tasks, answer common questions, and ensure the Festival HQ is kept tidy. Individuals in this crew will be comfortable using a computer, are highly organized, collaborative, effective communicators, and able to work under some degree of stress.
Industry Registration Crew
Industry Registration Volunteers ensure that guests of the festival are welcomed, receive their industry materials (festival pass, industry bag, etc.), and have their questions about the city and the festival answered in an efficient and friendly manner. Individuals in this crew are organized, friendly, and collaborative.
Office Assistance Crew
Office Assistance crew tasks will vary depending upon what needs to be accomplished. Most often, the tasks are administrative and involve data entry and/or organization of information, although there are occasions when lifting or physical exertion may be required; this requirement will be clearly listed in all postings for this position, so that individuals may self-organize around their own abilities. Individuals in this crew are organized, friendly, and collaborative.
Production Volunteers are responsible for assisting with the set-up and strike of festival venues and/or special events. Individuals on this crew aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, are comfortable with /comfortable learning to use tools such as a wrench, hammer, etc. and are able to comfortably lift 25lbs or more. This crew will take part in physical tasks. NOTE: This crew may have the opportunity to work ‘split-shifts’ where a set-up is needed prior to an event, and then strike needs to take place after; in situations like this it may be possible for Production Volunteers to attend the event in-between their shifts.
Volunteers on the Relief Crew are the saviours and heroes of the festival by making themselves available on specific days and times to be dispatched to any role and any venue as the need arises! Individuals in this crew are able to work collaboratively and independently, take direction easily, are able to easily travel to different festival sites downtown, and are comfortable interacting with the public.
Special Event Crew
Volunteers on the Special Event crew will work on a variety of special events, so the tasks and locations will vary. Special events include Galas, Marketing events (such as the Trailer Party or Festival Launch), Behind the Screen events and/or Sponsor Events. Individuals volunteering on this crew take initiative, are comfortable speaking with the public, and can easily work both independently and collaboratively.
Venue Crew Volunteers are right in the middle of the action! They will work at one of the two main festival sites: the Globe Cinema and/or Cineplex Eau Claire. Venue Crew volunteers will be assigned to a specific role by their Crew Lead when they arrive for their shift. Roles include: Ask Me Volunteer, Line Attendant Volunteer, Scanner Volunteer, Re-Entry Volunteer, Usher Volunteer, Ballot Taker Volunteer and Green Team Volunteer.
Please Note, the following crews require additional information and / or credentials (e.g. previous volunteer experience, photography portfolio, writing samples, social media samples, drivers abstract, etc.). If you are selected for one of these crews, more information may be asked of you in a separate email.
Crew Leads are volunteers who manage other volunteers, primarily at our two main festival sites and assist in training. Crew Leads are individuals who are detail oriented, able to work collaboratively and independently, highly organized, able to meet deadlines and can take and provide direction. The three different crew lead roles are - Front Lobby crew lead, Back Lobby Crew Lead and Ballot Crew Lead. The crew lead positions are:
Front Lobby Crew Lead
As the Front Lobby Crew Lead (FLCL) you are the main front of house representative of the festival.You will manage the following volunteer roles: Line Attendants; Ask Me Volunteers.You will work with the Back Lobby Crew Lead (BLCL) and their team of Volunteers to welcome our audiences in an efficient and friendly manner.
Back Lobby Crew Lead
As the Back Lobby Crew Lead (BLCL) you are the main back of house representative of the festival. You will manage the following volunteer roles: Scanners, Ushers, Ballot-Takers, Re-Entry (at Eau Claire), and the Green Team. You will be working with the Front Lobby Crew Lead and their team of Volunteers to welcome our audiences in an efficient and friendly manner, and ensure that the cinema space is ready for the audience and that they leave safely and efficiently when the film has ended.
Ballot Crew Lead
The Ballot Crew Lead is responsible for ensuring that audience ballots are received, accounted for against the master list of films, accurately counted and tallied, and the results captured. The Ballot Crew Lead will learn the process for receiving and counting all ballots from the Operations Manager, and lead their team in fulfilling this task throughout the festival.
Photography Volunteers ensure the excitement of the festival is captured in photos, which are then used for marketing and communications purposes. Photography Volunteers are able to artfully and efficiently capture images in a variety of conditions, have (and are willing to volunteer) the appropriate equipment to accomplish their assignment, are able to navigate crowds / sensitive situations in order to gain a shot without interrupting the flow of an event or an individual, and are able to meet deadlines.
Social Media Crew
Social Media Volunteers ensure the excitement of the festival is shared online via the festival’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) by capturing images and writing copy that keeps patrons informed and motivated to join in. Social Media volunteers have excellent skills with the previously mentioned social media platforms, excellent writing abilities – including excellent knowledge/ability with online abbreviations and jargon – excellent ability to take and quickly edit photos, have an eye for interesting content, and are willing to use their own smart-phone in the role.
The Transportation Crew is there to transport festival guests and staff from their pick-up location to their destination in a safe, time efficient and friendly manner using one of the festival’s vehicles. You will also – when required – assist in transporting festival materials from one location to another. Individuals in this role are collaborative, respectful, are 25 years of age or older, have a valid class 5 license in the Province of Alberta, have a clean driving record, are comfortable driving in varying conditions (rush hour, downtown Calgary, on highways, daytime, nighttime, rain, etc.) and enjoy engaging with filmmakers and invited guests.
