Box Office & Purchasing Tickets
When can I purchase tickets to the 2018 Calgary International Film Festival?
Ticket Bundles, Passes, and individual film tickets are now on sale. If you purchased a ticket bundle or pass, you can go online to our film or schedule pages and redeem for films.
Single tickets to all films went on sale (online and phone orders only) on August 28, 2018 at noon. All ticket bundle and festival pass purchasers can now redeem their ticket credits online.
Please note that single tickets to films in the Headliners series are $17.
When do you announce the full festival lineup and schedule?
We announced the full lineup on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at noon. Please go online to view the films and schedule.
How do I purchase tickets?
1) Online at calgaryfilm.com
2) Over the phone by calling 587.393.3730, Monday through Friday 11:30 am to 5:30 pm starting Tuesday August 28, 2018. Telephone hours will be extended during the festival.
3) In person at the festival box office in Eau Claire Market starting Friday, September 14, 2018.
Festival hours: 11:30 am – 10:00 pm (Monday to Friday) and 10 am - 10:30 pm (Saturday and Sunday).
4) In person at the specific theatre venue box office during the festival (September 19 – 30). Venue box offices open one hour before the first screening of the day. Box offices close 30 minutes after the start of the final screening of the day.
Do you have special youth or senior pricing?
Yes - children 17 and under, and seniors 65+, can get single tickets to screenings for $13.
When does the festival box office open?
The festival box office is now open on the main floor of Eau Claire Market (200 Barclay Parade SW) for in-person sales and pass pickup.
The festival box office hours are as follows: 11:30 am – 10:00 pm (Monday to Friday) and 10 am - 10:30 pm (Saturday and Sunday).
Do you add fees to my order?
Yes, a transaction fee of 5% + $0.99 per item up to a maximum of $10 per transaction. These fees help offset the cost of our new ticketing system. If you are purchasing gala tickets (including Opening and Closing Gala) the vendor may apply additional ticket fees that are different from ours.
What is your policy for refunds and exchanges?
Exchanges are free for tickets booked using a pass or ticket bundle. Single purchased tickets may be exchanged for a $2 per ticket fee - sorry, we do not offer refunds.
Are there discounts for group sales?
Yes. Our 6, 10 & 20 ticket bundles are shareable, so if you have up to 20 people attending a film consider purchasing a ticket bundle. If you have 21 or more people in your group, or are interested in group sales for a gala or special event, please contact the box office at 587.393.3730 to discuss group sales options.
What if a movie I want to see no longer has tickets available for purchase?
If there are no more advance tickets available for a show, a rush line will form one hour before the scheduled start time at the venue.
What’s a rush line?
The rush line is admitted on a first-come, first-served basis based on the number of empty seats available in the theatre. Entry from the rush line is not guaranteed, so purchasing your tickets in advance is advisable whenever possible.
How do I redeem my ticket package?
When purchasing a 6, 10 or 20 ticket bundle, you will create an online account. Starting on August 28, you'll be able to redeem all of your tickets online in a single transaction or keep credits in your account. You will also be able to exchange those tickets free to a different screening if you change your mind.
How does a pass work?
A Festival Pass can get you tickets to all events and screenings at the festival, subject to capacity. Passholders will be able to redeem tickets to films, either online or at the festival box office, starting as soon as tickets are made available for sale, with the ability to cancel reserved tickets at any time. Passholders can also claim tickets at the venue box office starting one hour before show time. If the show is sold out, passholders may join the rush line one hour before the screening starts. If seats become available for the rush line, show your pass to receive a ticket.
I am part of the film industry, or a festival sponsor. How can I get accredited?
Industry accreditation for the 2018 festival is now closed.
What’s a better deal, a ticket bundle or a festival pass?
There are advantages to both. If you are interested in seeing just a few films, or seeing them with many others, a ticket bundle is likely best. If you want to see the most number of movies, definitely go with a festival pass.
Do I need to create an online account?
Yes. When purchasing single tickets, ticket bundles, and festival passes customers must create an online account. An online account, powered by Eventive Ticketing, will allow you to create a custom schedule and add films to your wish list when we release the festival schedule on August 28. Setting up your online account will only take a few minutes and makes it easy to make transactions quickly and easily.
How will Calgary Film use my personal information?
The Calgary International Film Festival will only use your information to contact you about the festival. We do not sell customer data to third parties.
Venues & Admission Policy
How do I avoid lineups?
There is no assigned seating in our venues, so audience members often come early so they can sit in their preferred seat. If you are particular about where you want to sit, we recommend you arrive approximately 45 minutes before the scheduled start time. We generally open doors to theatres 20 minutes before the film begins. Ticketholders must arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time of the film to guarantee entry.
What happens if I arrive late?
Your ticket guarantees a seat up to 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the screening. If late seating may be disruptive, or if absent ticket holder tickets have been re-sold to the Rush Line, latecomers will not be admitted. Late seating is at the discretion of the venue staff.
Are your venues accessible?
Eau Claire is an accessible venue, with elevators that bring you up to the cinema, but Globe Cinema is not - there are stairs leading to both the upstairs and downstairs cinema. If you have any questions about our accessibility, or which films play at accessible venues, please contact the festival box office at 587.393.3730.
Where do I get a program guide?
This year, all information about our films will be available exclusively online at calgaryfilm.com. If you prefer printed information about the films playing at the festival, you will be able to download a PDF that you can print at home. Small printed festival schedules will be available at the festival box office and at all venues.
Can I bring my children to the festival?
Films at the festival are not rated by the Alberta Classification Board; therefore, we do not provide classification ratings for any of our films. Every year we show some films that are more youth-oriented than others. Youth Focused / Young Adult / Coming of Age are tags that we sometimes use to describe the themes in our films; however, this does not mean that they are appropriate for all youth.
This year we launched Generation Next, a new youth-focused film program. Six films will be screened at the 2018 festival that are targeted at high school age students. Visit the Generation Next web page for more information about the program and the films.
Are minors permitted at venues where you sell alcohol?
Both the Globe Cinema and Cineplex Eau Claire are licensed during the festival, which means that you can purchase alcohol at both of our main festival venues. We receive a special liquor license, which permits minors in the theatres where alcohol is being consumed. You will need to show valid ID if you are purchasing alcohol.
I like to see back-to-back movies, how much time do I need between films?
When planning your festival schedule, we recommend adding a buffer of at least 30 minutes between films and 45 minutes if you need to travel between venues. Please note that run times of movies listed on the website do not include shorts that may precede features or Q&As. Please take those into account when considering seeing back-to-back movies. Sometimes sold out shows, an extended filmmaker Q&A or surprise guest can cause films to run late. Our volunteers and staff work as quickly as possible to clean the theatre and get it ready for the next film. If we’re running a few minutes late, please be patient!
How long does it take to get between venues?
Most of our films take place at Cineplex Eau Claire and Globe Cinema. It takes approximately 15 minutes to walk between the venues, and 10 minutes to cycle or drive. As parking and traffic can be unpredictable, we recommend walking or cycling to films if possible.
Where can I park at the various venues?
Eau Claire Market provides plenty of surface and below ground parking. Evening (starting at 5 p.m.) and weekend rates start at $3 for 2 hours or $5 for over 2 hours. More information about parking is available on the Eau Claire Market website.
Globe Cinema street parking is available on 8 Ave and nearby streets and is free after 6 p.m. every day, and all day on Sundays. The Centennial Parkade located just behind Globe Cinema on 9 Ave offers evening (starting at 6 p.m.) and weekend rates of $2 (maximum amount charged). Please note: To increase the security of vehicles at the Centennial Parkade, daily between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. the parkade is accessible by buzzing in to the dispatch at either of the 5 or 6 St lobby entrances. Dispatch is available 24hrs a day, 7 days a week.
Why don’t you have gender-neutral washrooms at your festival?
Diversity and inclusivity is an important value to the Calgary International Film Festival. We are working to develop a comprehensive inclusivity strategy, including consultation with, and studying best practices of, other organizations and festivals. Although the washrooms at our venues have not been de-gendered, if you do not feel comfortable using a gendered washroom please speak with onsite staff or a volunteer for assistance.
Can I attend industry events and galas?
Our Behind the Screen Series is how we connect our audience with local and visiting filmmakers. Check the festival schedule for Behind the Screen events, which are all open to the general public. Depending on the event, tickets range from free to a nominal fee. All galas, including our Opening Gala, are public events.
There are so many movies, how do I decide what to see?
The festival’s programming team spends months choosing from thousands of films to curate a selection of approximately 200 films that you can choose from. We have tips for choosing your films:
- Go online. Our new festival system makes it easier to learn about the films and watch trailers. Log in to the system and “star” your favorites.
- If by show times is how you like to choose your films, our powerful new online schedule view is what you want to use. Pick your dates and see which films are available by theatre.
- Films are grouped by categories using tags on our online system. Pick an intriguing tag and see the film options.
Are there recommended restaurants or pubs nearby?
Eau Claire Centre has a full food court with plenty of options. For patrons of Globe Cinema, we recommend our official festival sponsor Paper St., located at 630 8 Ave SW - just across the street from the venue. They have extended their hours throughout the festival, and are offering discounts and happy hour pricing to moviegoers. Learn more here.
