The award-winning LIPSTICK UNDER MY BURKHA smartly uses the story of four different women to examine larger societal views. Rehana (Plabita Borthakur) is a young college girl who aspires to be a pop singer, but has to hide that dream underneath her burkha. Leela (Aahana Kumra) is a young beautician who wants to escape her drab small-town life. Shirin (Konkona Sen Sharma) is an oppressed housewife who skillfully juggles looking after her kids and a secret life as a successful saleswoman. Meanwhile, Usha (Ratna Pathak) is a 55-year-old widow who has to keep her rekindled sexuality tucked away from the judging eyes of others.
The four women are in distinct stages of their lives but united in their yearning for freedom from society’s restrictive framework. Packed with humour and plenty of heart, LIPSTICK UNDER MY BURKHA honestly portrays the lives of these women in contemporary India.
