After a failed and nearly tragic first attempt in 2008, the trio of renowned climbers Jimmy Chin, Conrad Anker, and Renan Ozturk return three years later in a defiant effort to reach the peak, but they soon finding themselves wondering if success will cost them their lives. As the climbers continue their ascent despite rapidly depleting supplies and extreme weather conditions, they must trust each other if they want to survive in a landscape not meant for humans.
