It is the summer of 1979, and Albertine’s family has gathered for a reunion in Brittany. As the adults gossip, bicker and swim, 11-year-old Albertine begins to negotiate issues of sex, death and how to live with the impending disaster of Skylab’s imminent fall to earth. A special jury prize winner at the San Sebastián Film Festival, The Skylab is Julie Delpy’s fourth directorial effort (her fifth, 2 Days in New York, is also at CIFF this year). Delpy, who also wrote and appears in the film, achieves a clear-eyed nostalgia in telling the story of the family’s reunion over two days and a night. At the start, the story is idyllic, as aunts, uncles and cousins converge on the sun-soaked family farm. But bad weather on the horizon foreshadow disagreements about feminism, race, war and politics.
