At once uplifting and heartbreaking, Call Me Kuchu follows the life of Ugandan LGBT activist David Kato. Billing himself as the first openly gay man in his home nation, Kato fights for the rights of those in the LGBT community, called Kuchus.

Working under the belief that “if we keep hiding, they will say we’re not here,” Kato and his group of activists endeavour to normalize the idea of homosexuality in the African nation. Kato’s struggle escalates when an anti-homosexuality Bill is introduced, proposing that all HIV positive men be put to death and anyone who does not report a homosexual be jailed. Despite tragedy in their ranks and seemingly impossible opposition from politicians and the media, the tireless activists in Call Me Kuchu continue to strive for a more tolerant world.
