Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Festival, Austrian director Michael Haneke’s Amour is an unflinching portrait of love tested by the tiny but devastating sacrifices that age demands from everyone. Set in France, the film watches an elderly couple as physical deterioration and dementia shatter the calm of their marriage.

Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) live in retired contentment in their comfortable Paris apartment, surrounded by reminders of their lives as gifted musicians. Their students are accomplished, while their own music stays locked in recordings on their bookshelves shelves. But when a stroke cripples Anne’s arm and dementia begins to take its toll on her mind, George and their daughter Eva (Isabelle Huppert) must face the promises that Georges and Anne made to each other as reality challenges the life they imagined for themselves.
