Director/Writer Aaron Houston in Attendance!
Don’t believe the children’s television industry has a dark side? It’s time to wake up and smell the sesame. As Aaron Houston’s mockumentary SUNFLOWER HOUR gleefully shows, it takes a certain sort to spend their day with their hand up a puppet’s backside – and they’re probably not the type you want spending time with your kids.
In Houston’s raunchy comedy, four contestants are vying for a spot on a popular children’s program. There’s Leslie (Edmonton’s Patrick Gilmore), the cheerfully homophobic and deeply closeted son of a minister; the conspicuously Irish Shamus (Ben Cotton); nihilistic teenager Satan’s Spawn (Kacey Rohl); and David, who seems well-adjusted considering his family’s less-than-supportive approach to his puppeteering. With only one position open, these four misfits will go to great lengths to prove they’re cut from the right felt.
A THIS IS SPINAL TAP for the SESAME STREET set, SUNFLOWER HOUR – produced by Calgary ex-pat Aisla Webster – comes across like BEING ELMO’s evil twin. Deliciously tasteless and consistently hilarious, it’ll change the way you see the wholesome world of kid’s shows forever.
