As a pair of teenaged lovers, Enoch (Henry Hopper) and Annabel (Mia Wasikowska) are entirely unconventional. Enoch crashes funerals for fun and claims to have befriended the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot (Ryo Kase), and Annabel is immediately smitten when they first meet at a memorial service. But Enoch isn’t the only one with tragic secrets kept close to his chest, meaning that the pair of troubled souls may just be the only two who can understand each other. Aged by tragedy but electrified by their youth, Enoch and Annabel are determined to find joy in the time they have left.

Set in a contemporary world that sits in a softly tinged period out of time, director Gus Van Sant and scriptwriter Jason Lew’s film tells a love story tinged with whimsy and sadness, following two people who have every reason to give up but choose to hold on to each other anyway. Part LOVE STORY, part HAROLD AND MAUDE, RESTLESS is an eccentric love story where, even though death is never far away, there’s still enough time to truly live.
