A quarter-century ago, China had one sex shop. Now, it has over 2,000. Add in the fact that the nation’s top-grossing movie to date is a 3D erotic adventure, and there’s no way around it – China has gone through its own sexual revolution. And for perpetual hard-luck-case Shunzi (Zhao Jun), there’s no better time to cash in.
Even with the broad proliferation of kink shops and dirty movies, there’s still a powerful stigma attached to selling sex toys in China. Shunzi, though, has no face left to save. After he loses his job driving cabs, his wife ditches him for her stud on the side, and keeps the house that Shunzi has slaved away to buy her. Broke, lonely and living with his parents, Shunzi stumbles into the world of adult toys and quickly finds his fortunes on the upswing. That is, as long as he can keep his nosey neighbours and the Communist Party bureaucracy at bay in this droll look at the clash between Chinese tradition and its ever-rising sex drive.
