Director/Writer Jasmine McGlade Chazelle in Attendance!
Those familiar with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s on-screen chemistry in Richard Linklater’s BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET will find plenty to love in MARIA MY LOVE. First time writer-director Jasmine McGlade Chazelle (producer of GUY AND MADELINE ON A PARK BENCH, from CIFF 2009) has crafted a relationship film that feels every bit as effortless as those classics of naturalistic romance.
MARIA MY LOVE follows Ana (Judy Marte, RAISING VICTOR VARGAS), a young woman struggling to get over the death of her mother, and to move past the mistakes of her father. Through the help and encouragement of her new boyfriend Ben (Brian Rieger), Ana challenges herself to reconnect with her half-sister Grace (Lauren Fales, MARIA’s co-writer) and occupy her time in ways that might help the healing process – or perhaps just complicate matters emotionally. Inspired by a true story and featuring a powerful turn from Oscar-nominated actress Karen Black as an eccentric hoarder who strikes up a friendship with Ana, MARIA MY LOVE is an unforced, emotional and extremely well crafted feature debut.
