From the mind of prolific artist and famed guitar player Omar Rodríguez-Lopez (The Mars Volta), THE SENTIMENTAL ENGINE SLAYER tells the convoluted, nightmarish story of Barlam, an El Paso grocery bagger, and his efforts to release his inner demons and find his true self in this drug addled, Latin infused, fantastic city. Loaded with colourful characters, religious iconography and one key ’67 Mercury Cougar, the film defies summation but rather dares you to unravel the labyrinthine plot. Fantasy and reality comfortably share the screen from scene to scene and when the lights go down on El Paso, the darkness of Barlam’s world comes undone.

Boldly embracing a surrealistic style reminiscent of David Lynch’s small town titles (WILD AT HEART), the film clunks and bangs against itself at every turn. But like the wild orchestrations of The Mars Volta’s most epic jams, you know there is a passion and expressiveness within. THE SENTIMENTAL ENGINE SLAYER challenges the viewer to keep pace and find meaning under the roaring hood of this tire squealing mystery.
