The beautiful but withdrawn Fausta becomes determined to transport her late mother’s remains from the slums of Lima back to her ancestral homeland in the Andes for burial. To do so, however, she is forced to face the immense fear that has crippled and isolated her all her life. Hailing from a poor background, Fausta suffers what the locals call “the frightened breast” (hence the film’s title), having inherited her mother’s wartime distress through nursing. She finds escape and reconciliation through a job as a maidservant for an occasionally tempestuous pianist. Through her tentative friendship with her employer's gardener and the development of her own singing voice, Fausta learns to heal the wounds which have haunted her for all of her life. The film’s patient cadence is underscored by beautifully shot scenes of indigenous life and local customs.
