Filmmaker Q&A: SMALL TOWN CRIME Directors Eshom and Ian Nelms

We've passed the midway point of the festival and today we're going for a different tone with the sibling directors of SMALL TOWN CRIME, Eshom and Ian Nelms. The brothers will be joining us for the film, a violent crime drama juxtaposed with great humour, on Thursday, alongside a pair of producers. Here's what they said about the film!

The Programmers' Top 10 Films For the Final Weekend

Over the last few weeks, we've brought you recommendations from the executive director, regular Calgary fans, and even an Olympic champion. As we head into the final weekend of film, we asked our programmers to round up a top 10 list of movies that you can find at our venues between now and the end of the festival. If you haven't seen any of these gems yet, check the schedule for showtimes and head out to the theatre!

Here they are, in no particular order:

We know, skimming through over 200 films can be fun but it can also be time-consuming. That is why the Calgary International Film Festival has put a call out to our trusty community members, volunteers, and even a few local celebrities to develop their very own Top 10 "Must See lists for the 2017 festival."

Escape The End-of-Summer Blues

We're getting to the end of September, which is a bittersweet milestone every year: while the days are getting shorter and the nights are a little bit chillier with every passing week, this month also means that we are in the midst of the film festival. We know it can be hard to leave summer behind, so here are a few film recommendations to keep you in vacation mode for a little while longer.

Love Movies About Love?

Filmmaker Q&A: PUBLIC SCHOOLED Producer Josh Epstein

Tonight at the festival you can catch the Canadian Cinema selection PUBLIC SCHOOLED, which was filmed just across the mountains in Vancouver. We got a hold of producer Josh Epstein, who gave us the inside scoop on what the film is about. Check it out before heading to the theatre this evening!

Top 10 Festival Picks from the Executive Director

Over the last two weeks we enlisted the help of some of Calgary's finest curators to bring you Top 10 lists that offered bite-sized looks at the 2017 Calgary International Film Festival. We finish off with one final list from the festival's Executive Director, Steve Schroeder.

Filmmaker Q&A: IZZY GETS THE FUCK ACROSS TOWN Director Christian Papierniak

One of our favourite parts of the festival is promoting up-and-coming indie films, which this year includes the debut feature from director Christian Papierniak, IZZY GETS THE FUCK ACROSS TOWN. As an in-your-face, fast-and-fun journey through Los Angeles with the titular character, the movie balances heart and happiness with soul and sorrow...and more than a little punk rock.

Top 5 Festival Picks from Erica Wiebe

We know, skimming through over 200 films can be fun but it can also be time consuming. That is why the Calgary International Film Festival has put a call out to our trusty community members, volunteers, and even a few local celebrities to develop their very own Top 10 "Must See" lists for the 2017 festival. Use these lists as a jumping off point for deciding on your own picks for the year, and hey - don't worry about cross-pollinating. Feel free to make your own top 10 lists from these top 10 lists, and more!
