What's New At Calgary Film 2017
You might be a veteran of the Calgary International Film Festival over the last 18 years, or this might be your first film festival ever - but either way, we've been working all year long to make sure that the 2017 festival is the best one yet. We listened to our audience feedback, and all of it led to this: a new and improved Calgary Film experience!
Here are some of the highlights that we're excited for...and it all starts in just one more week!
Opening Gala with Movie Nights Across Canada: To celebrate Canada 150, this year we’re working with Movie Night Across Canada to present our Opening Gala. This is the festival’s marquee event, and it's shaping up to be the biggest party of the year, with live performances, VIP parties, and a truly Canadian film, WHEN THEY AWAKE, to draw it all together. There are two ticket levels - general ($35, includes movie and after-party) and VIP ($75, includes pre-reception, movie, and after-party).
Awards Party (NEW): This year, we have moved the Closing Gala the final Saturday, September 30, which means you’ll have not one, but two nights to celebrate on the closing weekend! Then we’ll announce the winners of the jury and audience awards at a party on October 1, the final Sunday of the festival. See our awards page for the revamped awards structure, which includes some new ones for this year: the Best Canadian Narrative Feature presented by RBC ($10,000 cash); the Fan Award, which will allow our most dedicated fans to vote on their favourite film we've shown (announced post-festival); and the Fan of the Year Award, which goes to the audience member who's seen the most number of films at the festival.
Special Events - We've got plenty!
LA LA LAND in Concert presented by the CPO on Thursday, Sept 21 ($20-$80)
NO ROADS IN Screening & Musical Performance at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre on Wednesday, Sept 27 ($20).
Advance tickets are sold out, catch the encore screening of NO ROADS IN at Globe Cinema on Sept 29
SHOWCASE ALBERTA: UP CLOSE AND INTERACTIVE WITH WYNONNA EARP, with cast in attendance on Sunday, Sept 30 ($20)
LUNCHTIME SHORTS: A SAMPLING OF SHORT FILMS, presented by Lexus, and including a buffet lunch at The Palace Theatre on Thursday, Sept 28 ($20).
Happy Hour and our Licensed Venues (NEW): Doesn't everything just seem better with cold beer and a lower price? We think so! For all films that start before 6:30 during the week (Mon-Fri), tickets are just $10 and beer/cider is just $5. If you miss the deadline, don't worry - all screenings at both venues are now licensed as well, through the entirety of the festival. And they're still all-ages! Bring your ID, though, as you'll need it to get a wristband before you can buy a cold one.
An extra day of films at Globe Cinema & more screens at Cineplex Eau Claire (NEW): The audience of a film festival necessarily loves films - it's at the core of everything we do. This year, we’re opening Globe Cinema one day early, so join us on Thursday, September 21 for our first evening of general admission screenings. We’ve also expanded the number of screens in operation at Cineplex Eau Claire to six. Yes, that means we've taken over the whole venue for 10 days!
Focus on Alberta: Last year we introduced our Alberta Scene Series, which celebrates films made, produced and shot in our own backyard. It was so successful that we've brought it back again! We’ll also be celebrating two successful TV shows created right here in Calgary, WYNONNA EARP and TIN STAR.
Behind the Screen Series: Last year a big success of the festival was our new Behind the Screen Series, which aims to connect audiences to the process of filmmaking. We’ll have a range of new activities that will bring our audience closer to the people who make movies. This year the series will include a tour of Alberta Filming locations, conversations with special guests including Jason Jones and David Hare, and discussions at Paper St. Check the link to find out more!
More slots to add buzz films and fan favourites: This year we’ve left more spots in the schedule to add more screenings of in-demand and last-minute buzz films that may become available for us to book after other fall festivals, including TIFF. We’ve also added more titles to our Headliners series, which are the most popular films of the festival.
We've got a hip new look: Earlier this summer, we dropped the old acronym CIFF and moved ahead! We're now known across all platforms as Calgary Film, and can be found with @calgaryfilm or #calgaryfilm. You may have even seen our new tagline around the city: "What a Scene"!
We can't wait to show our fans everything that we've been working on for the last year. If you haven't attended the festival before check out a few films, or try your hand at our Fan of the Year contest. Don't forget to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for the most up-to-date info on screenings and news!
