Every year as the festival approaches, we get to know a ton of filmmakers from all over - other countries and other provinces, of course, but also plenty of talented folks from right here in Alberta. In fact, sometimes we encounter people that seem like they really should be in the business, and we're always eager to help some budding filmmakers hit their first milestones. In the spirit of encouraging the next generation of Alberta's creative minds to get out there and, well, create, we're proud to announce a cool contest for all the up-and-coming Scorseses, Spielbergs, and Scotts out there!

ATB Financial, the presenting partner of the Calgary International Film Festival, is sponsoring a fan-friendly and film-focused competition that could net you a crisp $2,000 in your bank account and a pair of VIP tickets to the Opening Gala. And the best part? All you have to do is create a 15-second spoof of your favourite film scene - whether it's the big reveal from the end of THE SIXTH SENSE, the "king of the world" scene from TITANIC, or the hijinks from DUMB AND DUMBER - and put it up on YouTube for the world to see. Lacking in the costume, lighting, camera crew, equipment, props, and sound department? That's okay! All you need is a smartphone and a vision. That's 2/3 of the way to being a bigshot Hollywood director!

There's an extra bonus, too. Not only do you get the cash and swag mentioned above, but your spoof film will actually air before the Opening Gala as well, with full credits that proclaim your visionary genius to the packed house. (And hey, that event is always full of industry insiders; who knows who you could impress with those perfect camera angles?)

For more information check out the ATB contest announcement page and take a look through the rules and regulations before getting started. After that, it's all you - and we, as well as our friends at ATB, can't wait to see what you come up with. You have until noon on August 31 to submit!

In need of some inspiration? How about reading up on some of the first wave of films that we just announced? Or maybe coming by our Late Shows announcement party at the Ship & Anchor on August 20, when we'll be screening the delightfully gory cult classic FEAST?  And if all this talk of filmmaking has tired you out, relax and commit to binge-watching films at the upcoming festival and pick up an early bird ticket pack - on sale now!
