CIFF & TIFF: A Tale of Two Festivals
There are only so many months of the year, and – let's face it – in Canada there are even less when we can be out in the open without getting frostbitten. Maybe that's why two major film festivals, our very own CIFF and the prestigious TIFF, often end up overlapping both in timing and in films.
Fresh from an extremely buzzworthy presentation in Toronto, we're proud to announce that we've added the film MOONLIGHT to our lineup (Sunday, October 2, 7:15 PM @ Eau Claire 5 - buy tickets here!). One of the most warmly-received films this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, MOONLIGHT follows a young boy growing up surrounded by drugs and desperation in Florida, and documents his struggles with his own sexuality through his life. But don't just take our word for it! Check out this TIME article about the film and why it resonates so strongly with audiences.
That's not the only film that's making an appearance at both festivals, though. Some other heavy hitters are found throughout our schedule - both our Opening Gala and Canadian Gala films, MAUDIE and TWO LOVERS AND A BEAR, are showing at TIFF before their guests head west to visit us. We will also be hosting visitors from BELOW HER MOUTH and WE CAN'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE TWICE, two Canadian films on both rosters (though that's about where their similarities end!). Getting into serious award contender territory, both festivals are showing THE HANDMAIDEN, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, and I, DANIEL BLAKE, which are all receiving major attention worldwide. And most notably among all of the crossover films is TONI ERDMANN, which is already being talked about as one of the best films of the 21st century - not too shabby.
There are more than 20 other films appearing in Toronto as well as here in Calgary: AMERICAN HONEY, BARAKAH MEETS BARAKAH, BURN YOUR MAPS (shot right here in Alberta!), DENIAL, ELLE, GIMME DANGER, THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS, HARMONIUM, HELLO DESTROYER, IT'S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD, JULIETA, MEAN DREAMS, MOSTLY SUNNY, NERUDA, OLD STONE, PATERSON, PERSONAL SHOPPER, THE ROLLING STONES OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ, THE SALESMAN, TRESPASS AGAINST US, UNLESS, WEIRDOS, and WINDOW HORSES. Even some of the shorts have found their way to both, including GODS ACRE, MARINER, MUTANTS, and RED APPLES.
So what does this all mean? Well, if you were unable to head to Toronto this year and you were feeling down about missing some of TIFF's highlights - worry no more! There are plenty of those films right here at home, and you won't even have to pay for a hotel.
Check the handy-dandy pull-out schedule in our guide, or on each film's linked website, for information on screening times and venues for every film mentioned here. And don't forget that you can now buy individual tickets, 10- and 20-packs, or Gala/Special Event tickets for our entire lineup. If there's anything on this page you'd like to see, we recommend moving fast - these films are bound to be among the most popular!
