Q. When does the Calgary International Film Festival open for submissions?
Q. How can I submit?
A: We accept submissions through Zone Festival, Withoutabox and FilmFreeway ($USD only).
Q. When is the deadline?
1. Early submissions: May 1, 2016, Regular Deadline: June 1, 2016 and Extended/Late Deadline: June 13, 2016. We do not accept submissions after June 13, 2016. All filmmakers will be notified by August 24, 2016.
Q. How much does it cost to submit?
A. Feature Films (60 minutes and over) $40 – early / $55 – regular / $70 - Late ($USD only for FilmFreeway)
Short Films (30 minutes and under) $25 – early / $35 – regular / $50 - Late ($USD only for FilmFreeway)

Q. Can Alberta-made films enter without paying the submission fee?
A. CIFF is pleased to waive fees for Albertan submissions, filmmakers must contact email@example.com for a waiver code prior to submitting their film. The following point system is used to determine Alberta eligibility--a minimum of five points is required:
Albertan location (2 points), resident Albertan as a principle cast member (1 point), resident Albertan writer (1 point), resident Albertan producer (1 point), resident Albertan director (1 point), Albertan funding source (2 points).
Q. Can I submit more than one film?
A. Yes, but a separate form is required for each film.
Q. Are there eligibility criteria?
A. Yes. Short films must be 30 minutes or under in duration, Features must be 60 minutes and up, completed after January 1, 2015. Your film must not have a scheduled theatrical release in Calgary that falls before the festival dates, which are September 21 to October 2, 2016. Your film must not be available online, for television broadcast, on iTunes or by video-on-demand.
Q. What genres do you screen?
A. All genres. Our program includes, but is not limited to: Canadian Cinema, World Cinema, American Cinema, Documentaries, Late Shows, Music on Screen and Shorts.
Q. Do you accept online links for submissions?
A. Yes. In fact, we prefer to receive links. Your link must be a secure online link. If you change the link or password, please inform us immediately as you risk your film not being previewed. If your film has an expiry date please make it for after our festival dates.
Q. What preview formats do you accept?
A. We only accept secure online screener links. Please add your secure screener link to the appropriate field on the form, or if needed can be included in the comments section instead.
Q. What formats do you screen?
A. DCP (preferred), HDCam, 35mm, BluRay. We also have 3D capability.
Q. Are you a competitive festival?
A. Yes. We have numerous awards for features and shorts including:
Audience Choice Awards: Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short, Discovery Award (Best First Feature Film) in the Narrative and Documentary categories
Jury Awards: Alberta Spirit Award, Best Overall Short Film*
*The winner of the Best Overall Short film award is now eligible to enter the short film competition for the concurrent Oscar® season in the Animated / Live Action category, provided the film meets all of the requirements set forth in the official rules.
Q. What are the Discovery Awards?
A. This is an audience selected award given to an “in-competition” first-time feature filmmaker, in both narrative and documentary categories. This is a cash award.
