Director Bio
Alanis Obomsawin is a member of the Abenaki Nation and one of Canada’s foremost documentary filmmakers. Over the span of her nearly 50-year career, she has directed some 50 films with the National Film Board of Canada. Her multi-award-winning work, which gives a voice to Canada’s First Nations people, includes her 1993 feature documentary, Kanesatake: 270 Years of Resistance, and Hi-Ho Mistahey!, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival Film (TIFF) in 2013. Obomsawin’s latest project, We Can’t Make the Same Mistake Twice, documents the nine-year legal saga in which Native Canadians battled the federal government to secure the same services for their children as enjoyed by other children across the country.
