Merchants of Doubt

Year 2014
Runtime 96 mins

Are climate change policies in danger when the voice of science is working for a paycheque?

In the latest documentary by Robert Kenner (FOOD INC.), you’ll be plunged into the shadowy world of hired skeptics whose professional voices are bought and paid for by corporations, think tanks and special interest groups.

Tracing the history of pundits-for-hire from the tobacco companies of the 1950s to the current climate-change denial movement, Kenner explores the shady facts behind the theories of these hired skeptics, whose work is taken as truth by think tanks and government circles, despite little scientific evidence to back it up.

Replicating the same successful model pioneered by tobacco corporations and re-purposed by pharmaceutical companies, today’s skeptics are working to delay government action while casting doubt on the entire issue of climate change.

By profiling and uncovering the credentials and motivations of some key skeptics working today, Kenner exposes how these hired individuals set the current climate for denial and delayed action for political movement.

In an environment where a paycheque can be more highly regarded than the scientific facts, we see how corporations have been shaping what we have come to take as truth.
