Year 2012
Runtime 90 mins
Language English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati
A provocative look at two very different sides of India, The World Before Her showcases two extremes of the nation's youth culture. On the one side, director Nisha Pahuja shows a group of women training to compete for the title of Miss India. Documenting a 30-day bootcamp, the film shows the rigorous preparation that goes into the beauty pageant. On the other, a very different kind of preparation is shown as young Indian girls are trained in a fundamentalist Hindu camp, where they learn hand-to-hand combat skills and are taught that nothing is more noble than laying down their lives to protect their home country. A portrait of a nation divided during a key transitional era in its history, The World Before Her was awarded the top documentary prize at the TriBeCa Film Festival.
