When filmmaker Linda Goldstein Knowlton (The World According to Sesame Street) adopts a baby girl from China, she realizes her daughter’s future journey will be a challenge. What issues of cultural identity will she face? What questions will she ask? Knowlton seeks the wisdom and experience of four remarkable Chinese-American teenage girls who were adopted from orphanages in the 1990s, the product of China’s 1979 ‘one child’ policy. In straddling two cultures, these feisty young women intimately share their experiences growing up as transplants in contemporary America: “I’m a banana, yellow on the outside and white on the inside.” They also face the harsh realities of their unique adoptions: the unlikelihood of tracking down their birth parents, and their initial rejection because of their gender. Somewhere Between is an insightful foray into the world of international adoption, and a moving portrait of true girl power.
