Karen Cries on a Bus

(Karen llora en un bus)

Year 2011
Runtime 98 mins
Language Spanish
Subtitles Spanish with English subtitles

Feeling dissatisfied with what she has done with her life and realizing she no longer wants to be coddled and patronized by her husband, Karen (Angela Carrizosa) leaves her loveless marriage and sets out on a search for her own identity. With her small savings, she can only afford a room in a dirty, run-down hole-in-the-wall of a Bogota boarding house, managed by an unsympathetic landlord. Her lack of work experience outside of the home makes finding a job difficult. Life, in other words, looks bleak.
Isolated and depressed, Karen’s spirits lift after she befriends housemate Patricia (Maria Angelica Sanchez), a brash young hairdresser who opens the door to adventure and helps her meet new friends. Drawing parallels to Henry Ibsen’s A DOLL’S HOUSE, KAREN CRIES ON A BUS looks at what happens when one woman finally works up the nerve to strike out on her own. It isn’t always easy going, but the struggles and tribulations are all a part of Karen discovering her own true self.
