Originally produced as an award-winning stage play by Halifax’s Plutonium Playhouse, CLOUDBURST is a road trip tale with a multi-generational twist — a story about the family we choose and the family we have no say in at all.

Olympia Dukkakis and Brenda Fricker star as Stella and Dot, a lesbian couple whose more-than-30-year relationship has brought them to a nursing home after Dotty’s daughter institutionalizes her. The pair decides to make an escape to the open road, heading towards Nova Scotia where they hope to make honest women of each other. But their straight-line journey begins to curve as Dotty’s blindness and a young male hitchhiker named Prentice (Ryan Doucette) complicate the trip. With Prentice just trying to get to his mother’s house and Stella and Dot trying to stay together, family is always at the centre of this trip.

Adapted to the screen and directed by its original writer-director, Thom Fitzgerald, CLOUDBURST is a uniquely Canadian look at our country’s conventionally unconventional relationships. In Canada,
family can mean all kinds of things.
