PHASMA EX MACHINA, which translates to ghost from the machine, is a chilling sci-fi supernatural thriller, and the directorial debut from Matt Osterman.

Since the death of his parents, Cody has been in charge of taking care of his little brother, James. Cody is far from coping with the loss, and he’s having trouble managing his new responsibility, especially since he began his new science project—namely, bringing his parents back. His entire energy is spent on building a machine intended to be a conduit to the other side, and taking care of James has fallen by the wayside. When the project reaches an unexpected level of success, things start to change in the neighborhood, startling the community and threatening its safety.

While PHASMA EX MACHINA is a low-budget film, its strong performances blur the lines between genres. Already earning comparisons to 2004’s PRIMER, Osterman’s film adds an offbeat element to the American Independent program this year.
