Being known as the most northerly and third-worst rugby team in the world would cause most to despair, but in this Finnish locker room, that stark fact (and a broken pinkie finger) doesn’t seem to get in the way of some good ol’ fashioned bawdy humour, nudity and fun—particularly for best friends Matti and Mikko. Reaching deep into the id of the Finnish male, Freetime Machos manages to go deeper than locker room towel-snapping and the homoerotic overtones of male team sports to observe men discussing job stress, pressures at home and even suicide. Part comedy, part love story and part Friday Night Lights, it’s surprising what comes out, both on the pitch and off.
