The Calgary International Film Festival
Board of Directors
Dominic Venturo

Dominic Venturo, President

Dom has been a CIFF Director since 1999, and President of its Board of Directors since 2000. He is a noted film lover and lists Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Godfather, The Third Man, The Long Good Friday, and Mediterraneo as five of his top 1000 films. He is very proud of his involvement with CIFF and the strides the festival has made since its inception. Dom is thrilled to work with his fellow directors, CIFF staff, and especially the hundreds of volunteers who have made the Festival the success that it is.

Melodie Lindsay

Melodie Lindsay, Treasurer

Melodie was looking for a volunteer opportunity in the community when she was recruited by the Calgary International Film Festival to serve as Treasurer on their board. She takes every opportunity to watch a film, or attend a cultural event, to give her business-brain a break and have some fun too! When she’s not working or on-the-town she trains hard for running events and triathlons.

Teresina Bontorin

Teresina Bontorin, VP Operation

Teresina Bontorin, LLB, is a long time Director on the CIFF board. Teresina brings exceptional organizational skills and knowledge of board process to her role as VP Operations – where she keeps the board and staff in line and on track! If Teresina were in the film industry she would make an excellent producer, and given her traditional Italian upbringing and love for gangster films, she would surely find a way to cast herself as the first female mob-boss to go down in movie history.

Peter Wallis

Peter Wallis, Director

Peter is delighted to serve on the board of the Calgary International Film Festival. His experience serving on the Board of Directors of public and private not-for-profit companies – such as the Homeless Foundation and the Alberta Ballet – allows Peter to bring some knowledge of corporate governance and process to the Festival. That he can do this within the context of an organization devoted to bringing a first class film festival to Calgarians is an added bonus!

Neil Campbell

Neil Campbell, Director

Neil has been in the movie industry for over three decades. He has spent his time in the distribution department of Sony Releasing and Cineplex Odeon Films, and is currently the COO of Landmark Cinemas of Canada Inc., a Calgary-based Western Canadian exhibition chain. His passion for the movies began while watching Saturday matinees at his hometown’s single screen cinema. Neil also serves on the boards of AMPIA, the Motion Picture Theatre Association of Canada, and the Motion Picture Pioneers of Canada. His passions and joy are found in his family and on the big screen.

Margo J. Helper

Margo J. Helper, Director

Margo Helper is the National Executive Director of the SEEDS Foundation, an agency that develops and delivers energy and environmental education programs to over 8000 Canadian schools. “My favorite things are being Auntie Margo, and laughing. My greatest accomplishments are volunteering and being involved in the community for over 20 years.” Margo’s past commitments have included the United Way, Calgary Allied Arts Foundation, Calgary Regional Arts Foundation, the Famous Five Foundation, and Theatre Calgary.

Alex Macwilliam

Alex Macwilliam, Director

By day (and often by night), Alex MacWilliam practices environmental law as a Partner with the firm of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP. He joined the CIFF Board in March 2007 and is thrilled to be part of this great organization. A devoted film fan, he describes his cinematic epiphany as occurring at a midnight showing of Pink Flamingos at the Plaza in 1975. Raised in Calgary, he is old enough to remember the Capitol, Strand, Tivoli and Palace Theatres and the Sunset, Cinema Park, Corral and 17th Avenue drive-ins – but not old enough to have been allowed in to see the original release of The Exorcist. Alex also sits on the board of Alberta Theatre Projects and is a Past President of the Calgary Bar Association.

Murray Ord

Murray Ord, Director

Murray’s career in film and television spans over 30 years in every aspect of the industry. From 1996 to 2001, Murray was the President of the Alberta Film Commission. During this term he raised the profile of the industry not only in Alberta, but throughout the world. He was responsible for bringing numerous film and television projects to Alberta. Murray’s production credits include films such as Unforgiven and Legends of the Fall. Recently, he co-produced Brokeback Mountain and the Emmy nominated television movie The Ron Clark Story. Murray is a partner in the successful Calgary-based production company Alberta Film Entertainment. As we kick off the 2007 Edition of “the hottest ticket in town”, Murray extends an invitation to everyone he knows to “buy tickets and join us this September. We're gonna watch movies, meet actors, directors and producers, and have some fun - Calgary Film Festival style!”

Brent Buechler

Brent Buechler, Director

Brent Buechler is the newest addition to the Calgary International Film Festival Board of Directors. He believes Calgary is on the tipping point of becoming a world-class city, and is well deserving of an elite international film festival. He is committed to helping realize this ambition and to establishing the festival’s reputation among Canada’s best. Brent loves discovering world cinema and has a tough time singling out favorite films. Brent’s day job is at the Glenbow Museum, and he invites Calgarians to explore the many diverse, quality cultural experiences in their own backyard – CIFF being one of these ‘must do’ activities!

James Pettigrew

James Pettigrew, Director

One of the newest board members, James is a Partner in the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC), and Calgary leader of PwC’s Entertainment and Media practice. A lifelong film enthusiast and supporter of the Calgary arts community, James is excited about working with the staff and Board of CIFF as the festival grows.

Terry Whitehead

Terry Whitehead, Director

A lifelong fan of film Terry joined the CIFF board one month before the inaugural festival. Terry is the Director of Fund Development for the Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver, and brings 16 years of arts administration and fundraising to the board. He has great admiration for the tremendous work of the incredibly talented and dedicated CIFF staff, board, and volunteers. A special thanks to all the sponsors and funders for their support, and all Calgarians for making CIFF such a success.
