Top 10 Festival Picks for the Versatile Movie-goer

We know, skimming through over 200 films can be fun but it can also be time consuming. That is why the Calgary International Film Festival has put a call out to our trusty community members, volunteers, and even a few local celebrities to develop their very own Top 10 "Must See" lists for the 2017 festival. Use these lists as a jumping off point for deciding on your own picks for the year, and hey - don't worry about cross-pollinating. Feel free to make your own top 10 lists from these top 10 lists, and more!

Is your taste for movies cast with a wide net? You know, you're super into the artsy films that leave you ruminating on the meaning of life, but you also like to forget the cerebral stuff and watch a good rom-com, sci-fi, horror, action, documentary, musical, oh! the list goes on. Co-owner of Calgarymovies.com, Wilson Wong offers us just that - a comprehensive list that knows no genre bounds. He admits that his go-to genres are science fiction and horror but "really" he says, "I love all different types of films." Wong sites GATTACA as his favourite film with the classic SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION coming a close second.

This list is the perfect starting place if you are looking to piece together a personal schedule defined only by your own versatile taste.

1. A DAY

A Korean time-loop drama with a twist? So much yes! Reminds me of SOURCE CODE and EDGE OF TOMORROW so I’m interested to see how Cho Sun-ho will push this concept further.

2. BEST OF SHORTS

Love seeing these every year. Some of the best stories live in shorts.

3. BREATHE

This will surely win some points with my wife. There is finally a movie about love and not just violence and superheroes. And we all know Andy Serkis as Gollum in LOTR so this will be the first time I see him as the director.

4. FAKE BLOOD

Knowing that our Calgary’s own Mike Peterson is co-producing this film is reason enough for me to want to see this.

5. HAVE A NICE DAY

I have never seen anything like this in Chinese cinema, especially as an animated film. This looks bold and definitely a non-typical Chinese film.

6. LA LA LAND IN CONCERT

To be honest I haven’t seen this Oscar winning film yet…I know, I’m probably the last one on earth. Together with Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra will make it even better.

7. MADE IN VIETNAM

Gotta support local and looking forward to hearing more from Thi after the screening.

8. WHEN THEY AWAKE (OPENING GALA FILM)

I believe art and music connects us all. I think this film will help break down some of those barriers and give us a new appreciation for indigenous art and culture. Not to mention that there's an amazing party afterwards.

9. STRONGER

Looking forward to seeing Jake Gyllenhaal, one of my favourite actors.

10. SCORE: A FILM MUSIC DOCUMENTARY

Film scores is probably one of my most listened to playlist while I work. We get to relive some of those epic movie moments and learn about the creative process from the masters.
