Joe Media Group Alberta Centennial Award

Inaugurated in 2005 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Alberta as a province, this award is for Best New Alberta Short Film. Recognizing Alberta’s filmmakers, locations, and stories, no matter what the content, the films reflect the diversity of style and approach that is expected from our complex and fascinating province.

CityTV Awards for Best Canadian Feature

The road to getting a first feature film off the ground and onto the screen is an amazing and arduous journey. It can only be achieved as a labour of love - one that results in the birth of a celluloid creature which can engage, transport, and touch us as an audience and individuals. This category celebrates the dedication, devotion, and downright hard work it takes to get there.

Movie Central Best International Feature Award

CIFF’s inaugural Movie Central Best International Feature Award brings a new award to the Canadian film festival scene. Celebrating the best of the best in contemporary filmmaking from around the world, the award will honor a filmmaker from a country outside of Canada. Drawing attention to a foreign film reflects Calgary’s growing cosmopolitan population, brings awareness and relevance to the Festival as an advocate of contemporary trends and issues in international cinema, and allows CIFF to garner support for these remarkable filmmakers.

Youth by Youth Cinema (YYC) Filmmaking Competition

A program for young Alberta filmmakers from grades 4 through 12, YYC celebrates emerging filmmakers in the Calgary area, and provides a foundation for CIFF’s commitment to supporting the convergence of youth films and new media. The Programming Committee will select the top films for presentation during the Festival (Sept. 21-30, 2007) and a Jury will choose the winners of awards for Best Fiction Film and Best Documentary Film. A Viewer’s Choice Award will be given using an online video streaming and voting component.

Best Documentaries - NFB Best Canadian Documentary & Best International Documentary

The documentary form is constantly changing in both form and content, yet one constant remains - the development and exposition of compelling, real stories of the world. Subjectivity befalls this category, however, leading to increased scrutiny. Documentaries not only have to be well-researched, well-told, and interesting, they also have to be visually captivating. This category rewards these story tellers, the “Producers of Reality.”

Movieola Best Short Film

Sometimes, less is more. A short film has to get to the point quickly, succinctly, and with flair. Shorts are often the young filmmaker’s first foray into the world of cinema, and are a large step toward tackling bigger projects. Our shorts program is diverse and encompasses an eclectic mix of films and cinematic styles. This category recognizes best overall achievement among the diverse Canadian and international selections.
